ShipFinex is a digital exchange that tokenises maritime assets and simplifies investments. There is a pressing need for capital liquidity in the maritime sector as institutional funding is cumbersome and out of reach for many shipowners.
Ship finance is the process of raising money to purchase ships. A ship owner usually approaches banks and private financial institutions to raise capital against equity. Ship financing is a complex and specialized field, as ships are very expensive assets and the shipping industry is cyclical. After the bank or the financial institution is paid off, Ship owners typically have large amounts of capital (in the range of several millions of dollars) locked up in their maritime assets (ships).
Shipfinex offers these shipowners a much needed route to unlock this locked up capital by using blockchain technology and the concept of fractional ownership. Ships are tokenised on the platform legally and divided into several fractions or Maritime Asset Tokens (MAT’s). Each individual MAT token represents legal ownership of the ship in proportion of its value to the whole value of the ship.
ShipFinex's core proposition is enabling sustainability and liquidity in the maritime sector by building trust across the globe between investors, businesses, and stakeholders using blockchain, DeFi, AI, and Web3 technologies.
